Mental Health First Aid Courses

Why Should You Care About Mental Health in Your Waste Business?

1 in 4 people in the UK are suffering from a mental health illness and it has become one of the main reasons for staff absence.

In the waste industry, with the closure of landfill sites, the volumes of waste to be processed have increased exponentially, and the pressure on operators is greater than ever before.

In the course of our work with waste sites we have witnessed the effects of this stress on the health and wellbeing of individuals, and the knock-on effects to the business operation.

That is why we have decided to add Mental Health First Aid training to our service offering.

What does the training involve?

We offer two versions of the course, the first is designed for supervisors and the second is for operators and combines both physical and mental first aid together:

Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

This 2-day course qualifies supervisors to be Mental Health First Aiders and offers them a deep understanding of what mental health is and what factors affect this.

Stress, anxiety and depression is the most common illness and is often caused by challenging life events or work.

Attending this course will give you practical skills to spot the signs of mental illness and ensuring you have the confidence to support those who need assistance.

Fortunately, the majority of mental health conditions are mild and can be treated by a GP. But, as employers, we have a duty of care and must protect the welfare of our employees.

Please note, the course covers the following sensitive topics; stress, anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol misuse, PTSD, self-harm, suicide, eating disorder, personality disorders, bipolar disorders, psychosis and schizophrenia.

First Aid for Mental and Physical Health

This course is delivered in one day, delegates will get two certificates lasting 3 years. In the first part of the course we cover the Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health and in the second, the Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator.

Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health

This qualification will provide learners with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help.

It will also allow learners to understand how to recognise and manage stress.

Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator

Learners will be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally and a casualty who is not breathing normally.

Learner’s will know how to safely use an automated external defibrillator and be able to safely use one.
